Inachis io, or European Peacock butterfly, is commonly found in England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales. Its range may extend as far east as Japan. This harbinger of spring hibernates during the winter and is relatively long-lived (up to 11 months). The caterpillars feed mostly on stinging nettles, while the adults may sip nectar, sap, or rotten fruit.
