Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, or Humuhumu for short, is the state fish of Hawaii. This Hawaiian name means “triggerfish with a snout like a pig.” The scientific name is Rhinecanthus rectangulus, but Humuhumu is also known as the reef, Rectangular, or Wedge-tail Triggerfish. As a defense mechanism, Triggerfish can erect a long dorsal spine, locking themselves in a niche among rocks or coral.
